Google Offers Free Gemini AI Plus for One Year to College Students

Google is handing college students a free year of Gemini. Which plan you get, though, depends on which country you are sitting in.

College Students Get 12 Months of Google AI for Free

If you are in college, Google will give you a year of its paid AI plan for free. The offer went live on 19 August 2026 on Google's blog, and it runs in more than 140 markets. You have until 31 December 2026 to take it.

You need to be a university student aged 18 or over. Google checks that you really are one when you sign up, and it checks again every year.

Here is the catch that most write-ups skipped. There is not one student plan, there are two, and the border decides which one you get.

US Students Get AI Pro, Everyone Else Gets AI Plus

Students in America get Google AI Pro, worth $19.99 a month. Students everywhere else get Google AI Plus, worth $4.99 a month.

Jennifer Shen, who runs product management for the Gemini app, laid it out in two paragraphs, one after the other.

American students get 4x higher usage limits in Gemini, Gemini Spark, Gemini inside Gmail and Google Docs, 5 TB of storage and Google Health Premium. Everyone else gets Gemini Omni, 2x higher usage limits and 400 GB of storage.

So on price the American plan is four times bigger, and on storage it is more than 12 times bigger.

The gap is smaller than those numbers make it sound. AI Plus is not a stripped down plan. In India, for example, it already puts Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and it already runs Gemini 3 Pro, Nano Banana Pro and video generation. What American students really get on top is 4x limits against 2x, 5 TB against 400 GB, plus Gemini Spark and Google Health Premium.

One more thing worth knowing if you are outside America. That 400 GB is more storage than paying customers get, because the normal AI Plus plan comes with 200 GB. Students are getting twice as much.

The footnotes also say where the offer does not run at all. Canada and Hong Kong miss out on both plans, and so do Bolivia and Albania, plus Macau and Tunisia.

Last Year Indian Students Got AI Pro Free

Google ran a student offer in India last year too, and that one was AI Pro. This year Indian students are on Plus.

You do not have to take anyone's word for it, because Google says so on its own India student page.

"The free-of-charge Google AI Plus student offer is available to eligible university students aged 18+. Both new users and students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired can qualify. Eligibility must be verified each year to maintain access."

Read that again. Google is telling students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has run out that they can come back and take Plus. Same student in the same country, one step down. If you claimed the 2025 offer, you had 5 TB of storage and 4x usage limits. This year you get 400 GB and 2x.

Here is why. AI Plus did not exist in India in 2025. Google launched it there on 10 December 2025 at ₹399 a month, with ₹199 for the first six months, to go after cheap rivals like ChatGPT Go. Before that, the cheapest Google AI plan an Indian student could buy was AI Pro at ₹1,950.

The Free Year Needs a Card and Renews Automatically

Google calls this a trial in its own footnote, and it behaves like one.

"Valid form of payment required at sign-up. Unless cancelled earlier, Google AI Plus will automatically charge $4.99/month or local currency equivalent after the trial ends. Cancel at any time."

So you hand over a card on day one. A year later that same card quietly starts paying, and it keeps paying unless you go in and stop it. In America that is $19.99 a month, and in India it is ₹399, which works out to ₹4,788 over the following year. Put the end date in your calendar on the day you sign up.

There is a paid offer sitting next to the free one, and it runs longer. If you want music and video without ads, Google will sell you AI Pro bundled with YouTube Premium at up to 70 percent off. Google checks that you are a student through SheerID, and that discount can last up to four years. After that, the terms say it may renew on its own at the full monthly price once you stop being a student. That is right around the time you graduate and stop watching your bank statement.

The Study Tools Are Free for Everyone, Not Just Subscribers

Google says the student hub, study notebooks, interactive visualisations and Deep Research in Gemini Live are going out to every Gemini app user. You do not have to pay anything to get them.

Study notebooks work like this. You upload your lecture notes. Gemini runs a quick quiz to find out what you do not know, then builds short lessons around those gaps and tracks how you are doing. It can also pull exam and assignment dates out of your syllabus and drop them into Google Calendar, if you let it. Interactive visualisations turn a question into something you can spin around and zoom into, like a 3D model of DNA. And Deep Research inside Gemini Live goes off and writes a full research report in the background, then pings you when it is done.

So what does the free plan actually buy you? Room. Unlimited uploads for study notebooks, double the usage limits, more storage.

Google is also turning up late to something students already do. A three year survey of 483 business students found the share using AI eight or more times a week went from 13 percent to 39 percent.

Go and take it. A free year of a paid plan is still a free year, and the storage on its own pays for the 10 minutes it takes to sign up. Just be clear about what you are getting. If you are outside America you are getting Google's cheaper tier. And if you are in India, it is a step down from the AI Pro trial students got last year. Then do one thing. Google checks your student status every year, and the plan renews itself, so the free year ends on a date nobody is going to remind you about. Set that reminder yourself. And it is worth knowing what Google gets out of these 12 months. It gets you used to opening Gemini first when you do not know something, and that habit costs you nothing to keep once the trial is over.
