Battle of the AI Music begins! Former researchers at Google DeepMind recently launched Udio, a music-generation AI tool that allows users to create amazing music in various styles and genres through powerful prompts. It claims to achieve better results than other music generators like Stability AI’s Stable Audio and Suno AI’s Suno v3.

Immediately after it was released, speculation started on whether Udio could dethrone the current “king of AI music” Suno v3. While the intricacies from a musical point of view can only be evaluated by professionals, most users seem to prefer Suno over Udio.

We will test these claims to see if Udio is all that it’s cracked up to be.

In short, Udio produces exceptionally refined music, but it sometimes deviates slightly from the intended genre. Conversely, Suno consistently captures the essence of the genre, although its output may exhibit more noise and simpler production.

Test 1: Generic Prompts with limited style & genre

The first test would be on rather generic audio. We generated lyrical music describing common scenarios to test the ability of the models on both lyrical eloquence and musical quality.

Prompt: Generate a love ballad for a bride to walk down the aisle. Include soft piano and soft guitar instrumentals

Prompt: a song about heartbreak, rock, and indie rock

In these examples, the main takeaway would be that on a generic scale, They sound quite the same. The quality of music in Udio is crisper and clearer while Suno has better command over the lyrics.

Test 2: Specific Prompts for both Udio & Suno

I’m sure we have all heard by now, the amazing and hilarious rendition of the Dune movie as a musical that Bobby B. generated on Udio.

This is wild.

Udio just dropped and it's like Sora for music.

The music are insane quality, 100% AI. 🤯

As a fair comparison, we gave Suno the same prompt with the same lyrics and music style to compare to the original.

prompt: Dune the musical
Teen Pop, Show Tunes, Film Soundtrack, Television Music, uplifting, playful, female vocalist, happy, male vocalist, love pic.twitter.com/VcHkArCmuO

As far as the quality is concerned, I believe Suno generated better-quality music. We are partial to the more upbeat and stage-show-appropriate music that Udio generated over the more pop style of Suno v3.

Next, we compared the country song “Wow….. I Didn’t Know That” which was also generated by the same creator as the previous track.
This one was an auto-generated song where the model generated its lyrics and music without any particular descriptor.

The prompt was: “Americana, Country, Bluegrass, Melodic, Passionate, Lush, Rhythmic, male vocalist, anthemic, uplifting, pop, playful“.

Here is the output by Udio:

Here is the output by Suno:

Here the music composition by Udio is again a better fit genre-wise along with clearer vocals.

Test 3: Same Prompts for the Pizza song

Let’s take a look at some more examples generated by users across social media sites.

A tester compared Suno v3 and Udio on a pizza-related song and said that Udio beats Suno in terms of audio fidelity.

Working on this Pizza song somehow got the vid to export

Here you go Suno V3 x Udio

im really impressed with the fidelity of udio so far

The user believed that Suno generated a more seamless and smooth rhyme but Udio’s vocals were clearer, louder, and better emphasized.

Test 4: Song about Sore Tooth

The video below shows a comparison between the clips generated by Suni and Udio. The user wants to generate a song related to a sore tooth.

Suno’s music was more catchy and was an actual song, but Udio’s sounded more real and like an actual concert.

What is the Differentiating Factor?

Suno has taken several steps to consolidate its position as the No. 1 song generator by addressing the one major advantage Udio has over it: genre specificity.

Suno has now released an explore feature, that lets users pick a specific style and see what the engine comes up with. This was released as a dedicated listening feature, that Udio does not yet incorporate. There are 878 styles in this new release and adds a new experience, one that puts Suno slightly over Udio in terms of user experience and feedback.

From the multitudinous examples given above, we can see that Udio has high fidelity and genre-specific music with clear and loud vocals, but it may lack a bit in instrumentation, coherence of the track as well as the overall quality of the song, all these, we believe Suno does better.

Conclusion

The launch of Udio offers much to creators who want to experiment with styles and take their music to a higher level. However, it shows no major innovation beyond the addition of specifiable tags. All these features already exist in Suno.

But we must keep in mind that this is only the first version of Udio while it is the third version of Suno! If it can equal Suno in its very first attempt, We believe it could become much better than Suno with further versions.
