OpenAI has been on a roll for strike-up deals with several big content companies lately including Apple, Stack Overflow, and The Atlantic. But what is there to be gained with all these partnerships? Which companies’ content do they want? Let’s figure out what’s happening from all these updates here!
Why does OpenAI want to partner with Media Companies?
We know that currently, OpenAI is the world’s most powerful AI company. Its latest model GPT-4o has opened up various use cases on how Artificial Intelligence will be a part of our work and personal lives.
To enhance their huge language model AI systems, OpenAI and other tech companies must feed massive amounts of textual content, including novels, news articles, and social media conversations. When an LLM model is initially developed, its knowledge base doesn’t get much exposure to several use-cases and scenarios, which makes it inefficient at a large scale. It takes a lot of data to make an AI model useful and desirable at a global level, like that of ChatGPT.
It is no secret that OpenAI has had its fare share of AI hallucinations and improper generation of content, over the last few years. Every developer who is highly dependent on the chatbot, knows it’s not perfect. This is why OpenAI needs access to data of all these companies, so that it can cover up its shortcomings on the other global aspects such as news coverages, real-time data, live information and much more. These deals also guarantee the safety of OpenAI’s data, as all the deals are signed keeping in mind the safety guidelines and policies.
All we can say based on the latest deals is that OpenAI is planning to train its AI models in ways that transcend all technical limitations. Apart from feeding more training data to the GPT model, it is also planning to make use of various API integrations, platform content, and much more.
Apart from these past technical deals, they now also plan to grow in the non-technical (more journalism/marketing) sector. A deal with journalism benefits can grant them access to the latest news and credibility of big names.
The journey to become the number one chatbot involves not only empowering the technical side, but solidifying the other non-technical aspects as well, and this is exactly what OpenAI seems to be planning to do by striking so many deals lately.
These companies partnered with OpenAI
Now, let’s talk about all the companies that patterned with OpenAI in recent times and what they are looking to get from them.
1) Financial Times
The Financial Times also announced today that it has entered into a strategic cooperation and licencing agreement with OpenAI. This partnership will allow the Financial Times to add attributed content to ChatGPT, increase the effectiveness of its models by adding FT journalism, and work together to build new AI products and features for their readers.
OpenAI is at it again to bolster it’s journalism side. Users of ChatGPT will be able to view relevant inquiries together with a selection of attributed summaries, quotes, and rich links to Financial Times journalism thanks to this partnership.
We already know that how powerful Financial Times is as a news journalism company, and access to its journalism data will make OpenAI more empowered for real-time content and news data. This partnership will put OpenAI at the forefront developments in how people access and use information.
“Our partnership and ongoing dialogue with the FT is about finding creative and productive ways for AI to empower news organisations and journalists, and enrich the ChatGPT experience with real-time, world-class journalism for millions of people around the world.”
Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the evolving relationship with the Financial Times
2) Stack Overflow
They made a partnership with Stack Overflow recently to make use of its Overflow API, and also access the programming content present on its platform. This deal initially went out well for both parties, even Stack Overflow had mutual benefits in having access to OpenAI’s AI-driven data.
However, some days after the deal members of the StackOverflow community started protesting against this deal, by deleting their questions and answers from the platform. This led to a mass ban for many users. Reportedly the users weren’t happy and questioned why would a powerful AI supergiant like OpenAI need access to the platform programming data anyway.
3) Vox Media
Vox Media has signed a broad-strategic-based partnership with OpenAI. The two businesses will work together to create cutting-edge products for Vox Media’s customers and advertising partners utilizing OpenAI’s technology.
By use of this collaboration, ChatGPT and its subsequent products will leverage the trustworthy journalism and expertise of Vox Media’s media properties. Furthermore, OpenAI gets access to Vox Media’s archives, which offer a wealth of news content.
So, this means now the AI giant will be more efficient when it comes to delivering content on real-time latest news and updates. We know how recently inefficient OpenAI has been in providing real-time information, as it messes up and hallucinates the content. This latest deal can fix just that!
4) Reddit
After Stack Overflow, OpenAI went for Reddit’s data to get real-time content from Reddit’s data API. The aim is to help users find and interact with communities thereby integrating Reddit information into ChatGPT and other products through this deal.
This will improve Reddit content understanding and presentation for OpenAI’s AI tools, particularly for new topics. So not only will this keep OpenAI more updated with real-time information but it will also make it more responsive across a diverse variety of content.
On the other hand, Reddit will be able to offer additional AI-powered capabilities to moderators and Redditors as a result of this relationship. Reddit will leverage OpenAI’s AI model platform to realize its ambitious goals.
Imagine to what heights Reddit’s optimization and filtering techniques would go with the advanced AI capabilities!
5) The Atlantic
Now let’s look at the partnership with The Atlantic.
The Atlantic has also announced a strategic and content-based product partnership with OpenAI. The main idea behind this partnership is to make the Atlantic a premium news source within ChatGPT.
So, now we can expect ChatGPT to be a perfect weekend coverup of the latest news worldwide, thanks to this partnership.
On the other hand, the product team at The Atlantic will have exclusive access to their technology, provide input, and exchange use cases in order to influence and enhance future news experiences in ChatGPT and their other products.
In order to better serve its journalism and readers, The Atlantic is also now creating an experimental microsite called Atlantic Labs. For this development, OpenAI’s model training data will serve as the perfect empowerment.
6) Associated Press
Back in July 2023, The Associated Press and OpenAI reached an agreement to share access to select news content and technology as they examine potential use cases for generative AI in news products and services
According to the agreement, AP will make use of OpenAI’s technology and product knowledge, and OpenAI will licence a portion of AP’s text archive. Each organisation will gain from the other’s well-established industry experience, and they both support the ethical development and application of these AI systems.
“The AP continues to be an industry leader in the use of AI; their feedback—along with access to their high-quality, factual text archive—will help to improve the capabilities and usefulness of OpenAI’s systems.“
said Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer at OpenAI.
For almost ten years, the Associated Press has automated routine tasks using artificial intelligence (AI) to free up journalists to conduct more insightful reporting. Thus it makes sense for AP to agree to this deal with OpenAI, as a means of empowering their news platform with AI.
Lastly, there are also reports about a partnership with Apple. Clearly in this deal, Apple has the better edge. According to Bloomberg, Apple is partnering up with OpenAI for its AI capabilities, and new features for iOS 18 to keep up with the AI race.
Conclusion
It’s understandable that OpenAI is trying to be more than just an AI chatbot now. With access to real-time data and news content, ChatGPT can become the omnipotent tool, the all-knowing model. However, it is important to understand how these deals stand out with the community and regulators!
