Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference from 10th June 2024 to 14th June 2024 will be very important, as they are expected to make several AI announcements at this event, where “Project Greymatter” is said to be the heart of the event.

Highlights:

  • Apple is set to announce several big AI features at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference 2024.
  • These ‘Project Greymatter’ features may include Enhanced Siri, Powerful Safari Search, Generative AI for emojis and much more.
  • The deal with OpenAI is a powerful factor behind these enhancements.

Apple has embarked on its generative AI journey in the last few months. Now, people have been wondering what Apple can do to integrate AI into their devices and ultimately into daily lives. That’s why you need to know about Project Greymatter.

Apple’s Project Greymatter Explained

Project Greymatter will be a collection of AI tools that Apple will integrate into key applications like Safari, Photos, and Notes. It is the name that Apple is calling it internally as of right now, but may launch them at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple will provide a new take on AI that emphasizes products that regular people can utilize.

But will the devices be able to power it? Well, they have a trick for that, according to Bloomberg. Less complex AI functions will operate directly on the devices, while the rest of them will run on the cloud (data centres with powerful M2 Ultra chips). This is how Apple-based systems are expected to work post-Project Greymatter.

These are some of the expected Generative AI features from Apple:

  1. Automatically suggested responses for texts and emails
  2. Transcribe the voice memos
  3. AI-assisted image editing and retouching
  4. Faster and Improved Safari web search
  5. Customizable App Icons
  6. Natural sounding Siri
  7. Custom AI-made Emoji
  8. Smart Recap to summarize the notifications

Siri Enhancements

When ChatGPT and Gemini are getting major voice advancements, it will look bad for Apple to not improve Siri. It looks like Siri will now have a much more natural-sounding voice, and it can perform some tasks, especially when the user also has an Apple Watch.

Generative AI for Emojis

Apple is working on software that can automatically generate unique emojis from the user’s text. So, get ready to reply/respond to any situation exactly as you desire with this new custom emoji for every occasion.

Smart Recap

Smart Recap is a simple but very useful technology by Apple where the AI will be able to summarize the web pages, documents and notes of the user. It can also be used to condense the notifications which makes it easy for the user to read. It can save a lot of time for users and will be something new for a regular person to keep track of their things.

However, there is always a concern about privacy with all these features, so it will be interesting to look at how Apple deals with it, as they usually present them as a ‘safer’ option than their competitors.

Other than that, there is no talk of Apple Chatbot or AppleGPT as of right now, but let’s see if we get some updates about it. But, they were in talks to be in partnership with OpenAI. Through this deal, they plan to use OpenAI’s powerful AI models to empower their AI game for Siri. So, they might be more focused on using third-party models before building their own chatbot.

Conclusion

Project Greymatter is highly promising to enhance Apple’s Generative AI game in the long run. Indeed, Apple has fallen behind in the Generative AI race, but it might bring them back among the AI giants right now.
