Each tech company have been on the gear to accelerate their Generative AI development. Apple recently launched OpenELM, while OpenAI shocked the world when it released GPT-4o, the most powerful chatbot in terms of natural language interaction. Apple is lagging behind, so this partnership with OpenAI is the only way forward, as of now.

Highlights:

  • Bloomberg reports that Apple will introduce new AI features into iOS 18, powered by OpenAI’s technology.
  • These will be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10.
  • The collaboration will enhance Apple’s in-house AI capabilities, such as auto-summarizing alerts, Enhanced Siri, and more.

Apple is Collaborating with OpenAI

It is being reported that Tech giant Apple is collaborating to integrate AI giant OpenAI’s technology into their products, which might be announced at the big event on June 10.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is partnering up with OpenAI for its AI capabilities, and new features for iOS 18 to keep up with the AI race. This follows rumours that they were close to reaching an agreement with either Google or OpenAI in iOS 18, and it appears that the talks were fruitful.

While Mark Gurman from Bloomberg doesn’t expect something on the scale of what OpenAI and Google recently revealed:

“I don’t expect Apple’s in-house AI announcements to be nearly as impressive as what OpenAI and Google have already showcased. Apple’s executives have admitted internally that they’re playing catch-up, I’m told. And there’s concern that users will shrug at the new Apple features and not even bother using them. Apple, of course, will position its approach to AI (other than the chatbot) as vastly different than rival offerings.”

To accommodate these online functions, Apple is equipping its data centres with powerful Mac processors. Included in the modifications will be features that assist users in their daily lives (a concept the firm refers to as proactive intelligence) and an enhancement of Siri’s voice capabilities that will make it feel more conversational.

In addition to enhancing current capabilities that automatically update your calendar and recommend apps, this includes services like auto-summarizing your iPhone’s notifications, providing a summary of news stories, and transcribing voice notes. Apart from the features that OpenAI offers, iOS 18 is anticipated to feature an AI-powered iMessage summarization feature.

Recently, they also introduced the iPad Pro with new AI features, its highly capable AI-based hardware, designed efficiently on the M4 chip to solve natural language tasks and ML processes.

Is Apple running behind in the AI Race?

During Tim Cook’s leadership, Apple Inc. has encountered a number of difficulties, but none may be greater than the one it is currently facing: the need to overtake its competitors in artificial intelligence.

They had only come out with 3 major AI developments in the last few months namely ReALM, OpenELM, and the highly powerful AI hardware iPad Pro. Although these are powerful models, they still lack behind the progress made by other Generative AI giants.

As the competition continues, their rivals: OpenAI and Google, have emerged as AI powerhouses.

The company may not agree, but an excessive reliance on the iPhone for information processing and a lack of data collection have hindered the company’s AI-related products like Siri. As part of its efforts to safeguard security and privacy, it consciously performs both of these actions. However, they don’t always result in the greatest encounter.

The good news is that Apple has the chance to make a new beginning at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10. This shift to partner with OpenAI demonstrates Apple’s recognition of the need to change.

The company will introduce tools that assist people in their daily lives and enhance Siri’s voice capabilities to make it feel more conversational as part of the upgrades. OpenAI’s GPT-4o can empower Siri in both natural language and vision capabilities that we have never seen before.

However, that arrangement is limited in scope. In order to achieve maximum success in artificial intelligence, Apple will eventually need to abandon its partnership strategy, develop its chatbot, and incorporate it deeply into its products.

For the time being, it thinks the OpenAI agreement along with its in-house AI capabilities on devices and in the cloud will be sufficient to finish the job.

Conclusion

For now, it may seem the answer for Apple is to build a partnership with OpenAI so that it can come out on top and be on track with the Generative AI market. Let’s see whether they can fight their way back sooner or later!
