We just witnessed Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 where Apple CEO Tim Cook announced a deal with OpenAI, and also a suite of personalized AI tools under the name ‘Apple Intelligence’.
Unboxing Apple Intelligence
Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system available for iPhones, iPads, and Macs that offers built-in generative AI tools for improved writing and image creation.
Sounds quite innovative doesn’t it? It’s the perfect conglomeration of IOS’s Generative AI powers fused with user preferences. With the help of Apple Intelligence, users can simplify and expedite daily tasks.
“AI has to understand you and be grounded in your personal context like your routine, your relationships, your communications and more. It’s beyond artificial intelligence. It’s personal intelligence, Introducing… Apple Intelligence.”
said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO during the WWDC event.
This is what is highly needed in today’s world where we have Generative AI tools all around us, but have problems with when and how to access them. Now, these AI tools are integrated into devices directly., which is what the Apple company is know for.
New AI Features of Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence is built into iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Here’s what Apple userscan do with it:
1) Rewrite
Apple Intelligence powers the new Writing Tools! Users can use it practically everywhere they write. The first big feature is Rewrite where the user can select a piece of text and a new version of the same text. They can even select its tone to be either friendly, professional or concise. Apple has levelled up its natural language capabilities for sure!

• Intelligent suggestions and tone adjustment capabilities
• Integration with apps like Mail, Notes, and Safari
• API for developers to incorporate writing pic.twitter.com/lIjy9lQvZZ
Users can also prompt how they want to rewrite text like asking it to change the paragraph into a poem. So, everything is built in this one tool.
2) Proofread
Another helpful feature of writing tools is for proofreading. This feature mostly acts as a grammar checker and checks for any spelling mistakes and the order of your sentences. It also explains what the mistakes were, so users can make an informed decision.
3) Summary and Key Points
Continuing to talk about AI tools for writing, we have Key Points and Summary! If the text to send is too long, users can extract key points from it or summarize the main points with a click of a button. These points can be included before the text as TL: DR. You can summarize huge chunks of text with just a single tap.
4) Smart Reply
Lastly, to rapidly compose an email response with all the necessary facts, use Mail’s Smart Reply feature. Apple Intelligence can recognize emails you’ve received and provide automatic responses. but this is better than Gmail’s smart responses as it also asks a few questions to users to get the information and form the email according to that.
5) Genmojis
Users can express themselves in delightful new ways thanks to Apple Intelligence. Make unique, humorous pictures and brand-new Genmoji that are genuinely unique.
Create a fresh emoji directly from the keyboard to fit any conversation. Enter a description to get a sneak peek, then edit it until it’s just right. It’s also possible to select an individual from your photo collection and generate a Genmoji that resembles them.
6) Image Wand
Using Image Wand, users may turn their simple sketches into beautiful AI-generated images within the Notes application.

To create a complimentary picture, draw a circle around the sketch the user had drawn and Image Wand will replace it with a new picture.
7) Image Playground
Not just emojis, Users can quickly create unique photos using Image Playground. Circle anywhere in your notes, and it will identify what the image should be. We have the option to change the image by modifying the keyword prompts.

Is Apple Finally Back in the AI Game?
For long, Apple was behind the race of Generative AI in comparison with other AI giants. But now with Apple Intelligence, we can say IOS 18 is getting serious for the era of Artificial Intelligence.
People have been quite excited about the update and can’t wait for Apple Intelligence, which is expected to arrive in Beta this fall. Some have even praised Apple Intelligence’s take on privacy.
However, some users have even pointed questions as to where is a personal AI assistant from Apple. Siri got enhanced but some have demanded a more personalized assistant. Maybe Apple is still reluctant for that, considering its huge focus on maintaining the privacy of its development and training models. But who knows what we may witness in the coming days.
Conclusion
Apple has somewhat tried to rebrand the ‘AI’ as Apple Intelligence with a huge series of impressive Generative AI updates. They are not as big of an update as getting a new powerful Siri but this is just the beginning of how AI will become part of our daily lives.
